These elites not only are out of touch with the communities they purport to represent. They passionately push ideas that are, in the eyes of many people from these communities, harmful. By way of example, while my colleagues in the Ivy League continue to produce papers about \u201cdefunding the police,\u201d the overwhelming majority of Black Americans are clear, according to one <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/316571\/black-americans-police-retain-local-presence.aspx?utm_source=tagrss&amp;utm_medium=rss&amp;utm_campaign=syndication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gallup<\/a>\u00a0survey from 2020: It found that more than 80 percent either want the same police presence or more police presence. While my colleagues encourage people to adopt \u201cLatinx,\u201d just \u201c23% of U.S. adults who self-identify as Hispanic or Latino have heard of the term Latinx, and just 3% say they use it to describe themselves,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/race-and-ethnicity\/2020\/08\/11\/about-one-in-four-u-s-hispanics-have-heard-of-latinx-but-just-3-use-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the Pew Research Center<\/a>. Of those who have heard of it, 75 percent say it \u201cshould not be used to describe the Hispanic or Latino population,\u201d Pew found.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"5GIEFLYVKVCABCXFF2RFAUT2Y4\" data-el=\"text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41265 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?resize=240%2C320&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?resize=113%2C150&amp;ssl=1 113w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/PXL_20240829_180059543-scaled.jpg?w=1600&amp;ssl=1 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a>And Etc.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"5GIEFLYVKVCABCXFF2RFAUT2Y4\" data-el=\"text\">Nor do the elites attempt to engage in the necessary discussions with the non-elite &#8211; that is, these new ideas are imposed on the masses, much to their resentment. <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/11\/27\/straying-from-the-foundation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This is a violation of a central tenet of liberal democracy.<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"5GIEFLYVKVCABCXFF2RFAUT2Y4\" data-el=\"text\">In this era of fourth-rate Republicans actually being competitive with a Democratic Party that should be kicking their pants, analyses such as the above should be the centerpiece of the national dinner table. Is it?<\/p>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"5GIEFLYVKVCABCXFF2RFAUT2Y4\" data-el=\"text\">I have yet to hear meaningful discussions between elite and non-elite.<\/p>\n<hr width=\"30pt\" \/>\n<p dir=\"null\" data-testid=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-apitype=\"text\" data-contentid=\"5GIEFLYVKVCABCXFF2RFAUT2Y4\" data-el=\"text\">In a bit of synchronicity, Professor Richardson <a href=\"https:\/\/heathercoxrichardson.substack.com\/p\/october-21-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lightly discusses<\/a> Dorothy Thompson, a 1930s-era journalist who was in Germany and watched the Nazis come to power.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two years later, In 1941, Thompson returned to the issue she had raised when she mused about those government officials who had gone from thanking her to expelling her. In a piece for Harper\u2019s Magazine titled \u201cWho Goes Nazi?\u201d she wrote: \u201cIt is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of one\u2019s acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi,\u201d she wrote. \u201cBy now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many times\u2014in Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself has created, the certain-to-be fellow-travelers. And I also know those who never, under any conceivable circumstances, would become Nazis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Examining a number of types of Americans, she wrote that the line between democracy and fascism was not wealth, or education, or race, or age, or nationality. \u201cKind, good, happy, gentlemanly, secure people never go Nazi,\u201d she wrote. But, I believe, it&#8217;s also present on the left: the imposition of moral precepts of undiscussed, and undiscussable, origin, such as has occurred in the management of the transgender issue, is surprisingly alike across the political spectrum.
