The tiny cells have gone undetected for decades, but appear to be linked to gum disease, cystic fibrosis and antimicrobial resistance.<\/p>\n<p>The finding suggests that many other forms of parasitic bacteria could exist and be living inside us \u2013 we just hadn\u2019t been able to detect them until now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis microbe is clearly the tip of the iceberg,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gps.caltech.edu\/content\/roland-s-hatzenpichler\">Roland Hatzenpichler<\/a> of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>CF<\/strong><\/em>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We might find that these species have an important role in human diseases. McClean\u2019s team has found high concentrations of the new bacterium\u2019s DNA in people who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn8343-why-a-loose-tooth-neednt-mean-a-sore-jaw\">gum disease<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/dn27832-gene-therapy-works-in-cystic-fibrosis-for-the-first-time\">cystic fibrosis<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And also drug resistance.
