A\u00a0seiche<\/b>\u00a0(\/s<\/span>e\u026a<\/span>\u0283<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>\u00a0SAYSH<\/i><\/a>) is a\u00a0standing wave<\/a>\u00a0in an enclosed or partially enclosed\u00a0body of water<\/a>. Seiches and seiche-related phenomena have been observed on\u00a0lakes<\/a>,\u00a0reservoirs<\/a>,\u00a0swimming pools<\/a>,\u00a0bays<\/a>,\u00a0harbors<\/a>,\u00a0caves<\/a>, and\u00a0seas<\/a>. The key requirement for formation of a seiche is that the body of water be at least partially bounded, allowing the formation of the standing wave. The subsequent mega-tsunami \u2014 one of the highest in recent history \u2014 set off a wave which became trapped in the bendy, narrow fjord for more than a week, sloshing back and forth every 90 seconds.<\/p>\n

The phenomenon, called a \u201cseiche,\u201d refers to the rhythmic movement of a wave in an enclosed space, similar to water splashing backwards and forwards in a bathtub or cup. One of the scientists even tried (and failed) to recreate the impact in their own bathtub.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
