Polling suggests he\u2019s\u00a0falling behind Harris<\/a>; the Democratic convention has gone quite well for the party thus far; and the GOP nominee is increasingly looking for an electoral life-preserver. As The New Republic\u2019s Greg Sargent\u00a0summarized<\/a>, Trump genuinely seems to think that Harris\u2019 surge in the polls \u201cis somehow the result of him being constrained from going full gutter MAGA on her.\u201d<\/p>\n

All of which suggests the American electorate should expect to see the Republican take the presidential race in an even uglier direction over the next 10 or so weeks.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The MAGA<\/strong>-base may be energized by it, but the independents who haven’t figured out Trump, yet, will be asking: where’s the mature and sober discussion that leads into an American election?<\/p>\n

They’ll be moved, but in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
