{"id":404,"date":"2015-03-29T09:34:56","date_gmt":"2015-03-29T14:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=404"},"modified":"2015-03-29T09:34:56","modified_gmt":"2015-03-29T14:34:56","slug":"shooting-your-state-in-the-foot-or-whos-your-best-friend-ctd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/03\/29\/shooting-your-state-in-the-foot-or-whos-your-best-friend-ctd\/","title":{"rendered":"Shooting Your State in the Foot; or, Who\u2019s your best friend?, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More to add to this <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/03\/28\/shooting-your-state-in-the-foot-or-whos-your-best-friend\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>Gencon, a convention for gamers that reputedly brings in $50 million a year, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.passportmagazine.com\/blog\/archives\/41204-geeks-assemble-a-gaming-convention-threatens-to-pull-50-million-convention-over-indianas-anti-gay-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\">threatening to move to another state<\/a> when its current contract runs out.\u00a0 (h\/t Emily Summers Leabch)<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indystar.com\/story\/news\/local\/hamilton-county\/2015\/03\/25\/disciples-christ-threatens-cancel-convention-due-religious-freedom-bill\/70432180\/\" target=\"_blank\">this IndyStar news article<\/a> comes the report that the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) also notified Indiana that they may move its annual convention to another state:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Our perspective is that hate and bigotry wrapped in religious freedom is still hate and bigotry,&#8221; Todd Adams, the associate general minister and vice president of the Indianapolis-based denomination, told The Indianapolis Star.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(h\/t <span class=\"author vcard\"><a class=\"url fn n\" title=\"View all posts by Evan Hurst\" href=\"http:\/\/wonkette.com\/author\/evanhurst\" rel=\"author\"> Evan Hurst<\/a><\/span>)<\/p>\n<p>The same article reports that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiwanis.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kiwanis International<\/a>, celebrating its 100th anniversary at its convention this June, has expressed concerns:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;We have received inquiries from members asking if any of our international guests (of varying religions) might be denied service in Indianapolis. This is attention our city does not need,&#8221; said Kiwanis International Executive Director Stan D. Soderstrom.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, supporter of the measure Micah Clark,\u00a0Executive Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afain.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Family Association of Indiana,<\/a> believes there will be little negative impact:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8220;I just don&#8217;t see how this prevents conventions from coming here,&#8221; Clark said. Popular convention cities such as Chicago, Orlando, Phoenix and New Orleans are located in states with similar (religious freedom) laws in effect, and there&#8217;s no outcry by convention organizers to pull out of those locations, he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The IndyStar is continues on to note the law is not like those in the other states in one key way:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Daniel O.
