The <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em> is trying to portray it as the same as the incident with Ukraine for which then-President Trump was impeached, but failed to be convicted by the Senate.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">As best as I can tell, Mills and Cotton believe there\u2019s a parallel between Biden\u2019s policy and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trum<\/a>p\u2019s 2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/maddowblog\/ukraine-scandal-gop-tries-revive-bogus-corruption-argument-n1123591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extortion scheme toward Ukraine<\/a>, in which the Republican withheld security aid in the hopes of getting Ukraine to help him cheat in his 2020 re-election campaign. It&#8217;s the scandal that led to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/the-beat-with-ari\/watch\/trump-s-watergate-dems-on-offense-with-first-public-impeachment-hearings-73280581987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump&#8217;s first impeachment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This is not, however, a serious argument, in large part because there\u2019s nothing illegal about Biden\u2019s policy, and he&#8217;s not trying to leverage security aid for campaign help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What\u2019s more, a White House official\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/4655009-republican-planning-impeachment-articles-against-biden-israel-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told The Hill<\/a>\u00a0that the GOP\u2019s claims are \u201cridiculous,\u201d adding, \u201cSenior administration officials had already made multiple public statements about Rafah similar to the President\u2019s, including that we are also ensuring Israel gets every dollar appropriated in the supplemental. Trump failed to spend dollars appropriated by Congress that he was legally required to spend. This is about a purchase made by a foreign government and our decision whether to deliver that purchase right now, which could enable an operation we\u2019ve publicly and privately objected to.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>All of which reminds me of a birthday party I attended a couple of years ago. Among the strangers I met was an assistant or vice election judge. Plainly a liberal, she was more than a little bewildered by her observation that the Republican lawyers being sent by the <em><strong>Minnesota GOP<\/strong><\/em> to observe election procedures were just getting dumber as the years passed. You expect improvement over time, no? But she wasn&#8217;t observing that.<\/p>\n<p>I think that this same phenomenon is happening in Congress with the <em><strong>GOP<\/strong><\/em>. I know, I know, no surprise.
