Neuston<\/em>:<\/p>\n

Neuston<\/b>, also called\u00a0pleuston<\/b>, are\u00a0organisms<\/a>\u00a0that live at the\u00a0surface<\/a>\u00a0of a\u00a0body of water<\/a>, such as an\u00a0ocean<\/a>,\u00a0estuary<\/a>,\u00a0lake<\/a>,\u00a0river<\/a>, or\u00a0pond<\/a>. Neuston can live on top of the water surface or may be attached to the underside of the water surface. They may also exist in the\u00a0surface microlayer<\/a>\u00a0that forms between the top side and the underside. Neuston have been defined as “organisms living at the air\/water interface of freshwater, estuarine, and marine habitats or referring to the biota on or directly below the water\u2019s surface layer.” [Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Noted in “Is cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch worth the effort?<\/em><\/a>” Andrew Kersley, NewScientist<\/strong><\/em> (13 January 2024, paywall):<\/p>\n

In 2022, researchers including Rebecca Helm<\/a>, then at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, studied samples gathered by [swimmer and conservation activist Beno\u00eet Lecomte] during one of his epic swims. They found that the patch is teeming with aquatic life \u2013 mostly tiny floating \u201cneustons\u201d, surface-dwelling aquatic organisms ranging from snails to jellyfish. \u201cOne of the tragedies of naming the North Pacific Gyre [NPG<\/strong>] the garbage patch is that it erases the reality that it is, and always has been, an ecosystem,\u201d says Helm, now at Georgetown University in Washington DC.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But is it wise to keep the NPG<\/strong> around as it artificially endangers so many other creatures? The article doesn’t really address the issue in any depth.
