Only above the poles can the stratosphere become cold enough to create these rare clouds. However, during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spaceweatherarchive.com\/2023\/12\/20\/an-outbreak-of-polar-stratospheric-clouds-2\/\">this week&#8217;s outbreak<\/a> of PSCs, the clouds have spilled out of the Arctic to places they are seldom seen. This morning, Ian Carstairs photographed them over Harleston, Norfolk, UK:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[picture omitted, go follow the link, above]<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">&#8220;The display has spread south all the way to +52N,&#8221; says Nock. That&#8217;s more than 14 degrees below the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Widely considered to be the most beautiful clouds on Earth, polar stratospheric clouds are a sign of extreme cold. PSCs form when the temperature in the Arctic stratosphere drops to a staggeringly-low -85 C. Then, and only then, can widely-spaced water molecules in the dry stratosphere coalesce into tiny ice crystals. High-altitude sunlight shining through the crystals creates intense iridescent colors that rival auroras.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">A later update reports sightings as far south as Liverpool in the UK. Recalling that latitude&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latitude\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">definition<\/a> is &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In\u00a0<a title=\"Geography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geography\">geography<\/a>,\u00a0<b>latitude<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0<a title=\"Geographic coordinate system\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Geographic_coordinate_system\">coordinate<\/a>\u00a0that specifies the\u00a0<a title=\"North\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North\">north<\/a>\u2013<a title=\"South\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South\">south<\/a>\u00a0position of a point on the surface of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Earth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Earth\">the Earth<\/a>\u00a0or another celestial body. Latitude is given as an angle that ranges from \u201390\u00b0 at the south pole to 90\u00b0 at the north pole, with 0\u00b0 at the\u00a0<a title=\"Equator\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Equator\">Equator<\/a>.\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Parallel (latitude)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parallel_(latitude)\">Lines of constant latitude<\/a>, or\u00a0<i>parallels<\/i>, run east\u2013west as circles parallel to the equator. Latitude and\u00a0<a title=\"Longitude\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Longitude\">longitude<\/a>\u00a0are used together as a coordinate pair to specify a location on the surface of the Earth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Liverpool&#8217;s latitude is <a href=\"https:\/\/latitude.to\/map\/gb\/united-kingdom\/cities\/liverpool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">53\u00b0<\/a>. For comparison and future cloud observations, Minneapolis&#8217;s latitude is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latlong.net\/place\/minneapolis-mn-usa-5182.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">45\u00b0<\/a>, or rather to the south of Liverpool. Still, I&#8217;ll try to keep an eye on the sky<sup><a href=\"#1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>, and maybe get lucky. They look &#8230; almost clownish.
