Phantom time<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The\u00a0phantom time conspiracy theory<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0pseudohistorical<\/a>\u00a0conspiracy theory<\/a>\u00a0first asserted by Heribert Illig in 1991. It hypothesises a conspiracy by the\u00a0Holy Roman Emperor<\/a>\u00a0Otto III<\/a>,\u00a0Pope Sylvester II<\/a>, and possibly the\u00a0Byzantine Emperor<\/a>\u00a0Constantine VII<\/a>,\u00a0to fabricate the\u00a0Anno Domini<\/a>\u00a0dating system retroactively, in order to place them at the special year of AD 1000, and to rewrite history\u00a0to legitimize Otto’s claim to the\u00a0Holy Roman Empire<\/a>. Illig believed that this was achieved through the alteration, misrepresentation and forgery of documentary and physical evidence.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0According to this scenario, the entire\u00a0Carolingian period<\/a>, including the figure of\u00a0Charlemagne<\/a>, is a fabrication, with a “phantom time” of 297 years (AD 614\u2013911) added to the\u00a0Early Middle Ages<\/a>.
