The term is most often used in its historical sense as a nickname for the women in the\u00a0<a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>\u00a0who sat in the gallery supporting the left-wing politicians in the\u00a0<a title=\"National Convention\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Convention\">National Convention<\/a>, attended the meetings in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jacobin club\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacobin_club\">Jacobin club<\/a>, the hearings of the\u00a0<a title=\"Revolutionary Tribunal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revolutionary_Tribunal\">Revolutionary Tribunal<\/a>\u00a0and sat beside the\u00a0<a title=\"Guillotine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guillotine\">guillotine<\/a>\u00a0during public executions, supposedly continuing to knit. The performances of the Tricoteuses were particularly intense during the\u00a0<a title=\"Reign of Terror\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reign_of_Terror\">Reign of Terror<\/a>.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tricoteuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>French? Hell, yeah. A substantial fraction of English words are French extracts. Noted in &#8220;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/p\/a-culture-primed-for-indecency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Culture Primed For Indecency<\/a><\/em>,&#8221; Andrew Sullivan, <em><strong>The Weekly Dish<\/strong><\/em> (paywall):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>And indecent gawkers. \u201cIt\u2019s good to make fun of people who support criminals when they get murdered by criminals,\u201d commented one on Twitter. \u201cRyan Carson took the phrase \u2018bleeding heart liberal\u2019 way too literally,\u201d said another. (Carson\u2019s actual heart was pierced by the murder weapon.) Other virtual\u00a0<em>tricoteuses<\/em>\u00a0went after the traumatized bystander: \u201cRyan Carson\u2019s girlfriend is the Douche of the Week. 1. Showed almost no concern as her guy was murdered. 2. Expressed zero concern as he lay on the ground dying. Didn\u2019t even bend down. 3. Refused to give police the murderer\u2019s description. Soulless Marxist.\u201d Another: \u201cWHAT??? Ryan Carson&#8217;s girlfriend \u2026 started a GoFundMe page to make money off his death. I would tell her to eat trash but that\u2019s cannibalism.\u201d Or this: \u201cShe didn\u2019t react when he was stabbed but she sure didn\u2019t hesitate to raise $50k on go fund me. Makes you wonder.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Culture will coarsen until some incident, linkable to that coarsening, occurs and shocks a large majority of folks into shame. Others, who value their social prestige more than an intellectual honesty, will remain coarse, using various weak excuses for their utterances and sometimes, even, actions.
