The GOP<\/strong><\/em>, especially in the House, is approaching a decision point. I don’t know if they are conscious of it, but it’s coming. Greg Sargent of WaPo’s<\/strong><\/em> description<\/a> of the GOP<\/strong><\/em> caucus in the House, nominally of a majority party, is illustrative:<\/p>\n

What\u2019s become clear now is there is no Republican majority in the House united behind\u00a0any<\/i> governing approach. The Gaetz faction is committed to a project that most House Republicans ultimately are not: eschewing consensus governing entirely wherever possible and making no concessions to Democrats whatsoever.<\/p>\n

In this, the Gaetz crew has been urged on by Trump<\/a>, who wants Republicans to shut down the government to defund ongoing prosecutions of him, a Total War posture that would make any compromise on spending bills impossible. \u201cThe MAGA dysfunction caucus within the GOP just mirrors Donald Trump\u2019s political style and program,\u201d Rep. Jamie B. Raskin (D-Md.) told me.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And this won’t work to keep the Party together:<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not quite where McCarthy and most House Republicans are. Their game is to indulge Trump and the MAGA movement some<\/i>\u00a0of the time, but not\u00a0all<\/i>\u00a0the time. They are willing to run\u00a0bad-faith investigations<\/a>\u00a0designed to smear the Trump prosecutions, to launch an\u00a0impeachment inquiry<\/a>\u00a0into Biden\u00a0without any serious basis<\/a>\u00a0and to\u00a0use hearings to hype fears<\/a>\u00a0that MAGA voters are widely persecuted by law enforcement.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Resentful Trumpists, aware they’re being treated like children, will simply become more destructive.<\/p>\n

The GOP<\/em><\/strong> needs to accept<\/p>\n
