Some think so, such as Cristina Aleixendri of <strong><em>bound4blue<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018When we started, we were seen as crazy engineers for wanting to bring sails back to ships,\u2019 she said. \u2018But when we speak to shipowners today, they tell us we\u2019ll go back to wind and it will never be abandoned.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to understand why. The shipping industry accounts for about 3% of global greenhouse-gas emissions and is trying to move away from heavy fuel oil, which is highly polluting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Wind-propulsion technology will become a standard,\u2019 said Aleixendri. \u2018It started as a dream of mine. Now, I see it less as a dream and more of a reality.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Not only has Barcelona-based bound4blue attracted growing interest from shipping firms in its wind-assisted propulsion system but Aleixendri has achieved significant personal recognition for her efforts.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research-and-innovation\/en\/horizon-magazine\/ships-harness-wind-voyage-cleaner-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Horizon<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just how likely is this to progress? How far have they to go?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As of September 2022, only 21 large commercial ships globally were equipped with the ability to harness wind energy, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rina.org.uk\/res\/Wind%20Propulsion%202023_Press%20Release\">International Windship Association<\/a>. Though predicted to more than double to as many as 50 vessels this year, that\u2019s still a drop in the ocean compared with the global fleet. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s a massive market because there are more than 60 000 ships sailing worldwide that could benefit from such solutions,\u2019 she said. \u2018This is very nascent.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is wind-propelled cargo ships a thing of the future?
