Beguines were part of a larger spiritual revival movement of the 13th century that stressed imitation of\u00a0<a title=\"Jesus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jesus\">Jesus<\/a>&#8216; life through voluntary poverty, care of the poor and sick, and religious devotion.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beguines_and_Beghards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/books\/2023\/08\/07\/sun-house-david-james-duncan\/?utm_campaign=wp_post_most&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;wpisrc=nl_most\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Fans waited 31 years for his next novel.
