The source of the fire?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The\u00a0Dutch\u00a0coastguard\u00a0said on its website\u00a0on Thursday that the\u00a0cause of the fire was unknown, but an emergency responder is heard in a recording released by Dutch broadcaster RTL saying, \u201cThe fire started in the battery of an electric car\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>EV lithium-ion batteries burn with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reutersconnect.com\/all?search=all%3AL1N39D1OR&amp;linkedFromStory=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">twice the energy<\/a>\u00a0of a normal fire, and maritime officials and insurers say the industry has not kept up with the risks.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation has been launched by the Panama Maritime Authority and the Netherlands is assisting the inquiry, the Dutch Safety Board has said.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/salvors-briefly-board-burning-fremantle-highway-in-north-sea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>gCaptain<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not an existential danger to the industry; it&#8217;s a problem that needs to be addressed by safety engineers, or by batteries not using easily ignited materials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The car carrier Fremantle Highway is afire off the Dutch Coast.
