Sarsen<\/b>\u00a0stones are\u00a0silicified<\/a>\u00a0sandstone<\/a>\u00a0blocks found in quantity in Southern England on\u00a0Salisbury Plain<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Marlborough Downs<\/a>\u00a0in Wiltshire; in\u00a0Kent<\/a>; and in smaller quantities in\u00a0Berkshire<\/a>,\u00a0Essex<\/a>,\u00a0Oxfordshire<\/a>,\u00a0Dorset<\/a>, and\u00a0Hampshire<\/a>. Funny, I’ve heard and read about Stonehenge<\/em> all of my life, yet I do not recall, nor associate, the word sarsen<\/em> with Stonehenge. From the same link,<\/p>\n

The builders of\u00a0Stonehenge<\/a>\u00a0used these stones for the\u00a0Heel Stone<\/a>\u00a0and sarsen circle uprights.\u00a0Avebury<\/a>\u00a0and many other\u00a0megalithic<\/a>\u00a0monuments in southern England are also built with sarsen stones.<\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Hundreds of ancient obelisks<\/strong>\u00a0and stelas are strewn across fields on the outskirts of Aksum, a city in the highlands of northern Ethiopia\u2019s Tigray region. The largest of these monuments, which lies toppled and broken into sections, was carved with doors and windows to mimic a 13-story building, and once stood around 100 feet high. Weighing more than 570 tons, the Great Stela, as it is known, was hewn from a single block of granite-like rock cut from a quarry two and half miles away. At more than three times the height of the biggest of Easter Island\u2019s moai statues and nearly 20 times heavier than the mightiest of Stonehenge\u2019s sarsens, it is among the largest monolithic sculptures ever created and transported.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
