{"id":389,"date":"2015-03-28T12:33:16","date_gmt":"2015-03-28T17:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=389"},"modified":"2015-03-28T12:33:16","modified_gmt":"2015-03-28T17:33:16","slug":"senator-harry-reid-will-retire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/03\/28\/senator-harry-reid-will-retire\/","title":{"rendered":"Senator Harry Reid Will Retire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senator Harry Reid (D &#8211; NV), Minority Leader and former Majority Leader, announces his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/28\/us\/politics\/senator-harry-reid-retire.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">retirement<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p id=\"story-continues-4\" class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"430\" data-total-count=\"2599\">Given deep partisan tensions on Capitol Hill, Mr. Reid\u2019s tenure has become increasingly combative in recent years and included a procedural change on nominations that infuriated Republicans. He also came under fire for blocking floor debate, and even some of his Democratic colleagues suggested that he was stifling the Senate. Just this week, he alienated House Democrats who thought he was sabotaging a compromise on <a title=\"Recent and archival health news about Medicare.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/health\/diseasesconditionsandhealthtopics\/medicare\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\">Medicare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">Mr. Reid\u2019s re-election fight would have been a high-spending slugfest in the presidential battleground of Nevada. Conservatives such as Charles G. and David H. Koch, the billionaire brothers who were a favorite target of Mr. Reid\u2019s criticism in 2014, would most likely have spared no expense in trying to oust him.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">First elected to the House in 1982, and 75 years old, it&#8217;s time to let someone else take the seat.\u00a0 And who will it be?\u00a0 Surely not his last Republican opponent, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sharron_Angle\" target=\"_blank\">Sharron Angle<\/a>, who was Reid&#8217;s preferred opponent:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">\u201cThe campaign began to prepare at the beginning of 2010 to face Sue Lowden, the deep-pocketed, telegenic former anchorwoman and state senator. \u2018She was the person,\u2019 as one insider put it via E-mail,\u201d says [the <em>Las Vegas Sun\u2019s<\/em> Jon] Ralston, \u201c\u2018we were least interested in facing so we set out to make sure that she either 1) came out of the primary bruised and battered or 2) didn\u2019t come out of the primary at all so we would face Sharron Angle or Danny Tarkanian.\u2019\u201d Meaning Reid\u2019s political team could spend its time working to help the GOP pick its nominee.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">In case memory fails you, she was the one who ran from unwelcome <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/online\/sharron-angle-runs-away-from-reporters-reporters-retaliate-with-hilariously-spiteful-segment\/\" target=\"_blank\">questions during the 2010 campaign<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">Angle invited members of the media to her first big press event since her primary win. However, once the event ended and the press tried to ask her questions, Angle bolted.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">This truly baffled me.\u00a0 You&#8217;re an American politician running for one of the most important elective posts in the country and you aren&#8217;t even willing to say, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know&#8221;?\u00a0 I vividly recall then-candidate Jesse Ventura answering a question, during a gubernatorial debate, with, &#8220;I don&#8217;t know, but I&#8217;ll get the best experts I can find&#8221; &#8211; <em>and he won that race<\/em>, as a member of the Reform Party, against two highly experienced opponents, Mayor of St. Paul <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norm_Coleman\" target=\"_blank\">Norm Coleman<\/a> (later Senator) and State AG and State Legislator <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skip_Humphrey\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Skip&#8221; Humphrey<\/a>, son of the famous Hubert Humphrey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"318\" data-total-count=\"2917\">Nevada in general runs politically red, so the Dems will have trouble retaining the seat.\u00a0 I suspect there will be a pitched battle for key members of Reid&#8217;s campaign team.\u00a0 The Republicans need to worry about the last debacle, as the Angle team was shocked to lose the election; their polling right up to election day showed them with a lead.\u00a0 One presumes they brought in polling experts in the post-mortem to discover their methodological errors.\u00a0 <em>Too bad primary methodologies are not so easy to correct<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Senator Harry Reid (D &#8211; NV), Minority Leader and former Majority Leader, announces his retirement: Given deep partisan tensions on Capitol Hill, Mr. Reid\u2019s tenure has become increasingly combative in recent years and included a procedural change on nominations that infuriated Republicans.
