Omert\u00e0<\/b>\u00a0(\/o\u028a<\/span>\u02c8<\/span>m<\/span>\u025b\u0259r<\/span>t<\/span>\u0259<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span><\/span>,\u00a0Italian pronunciation:\u00a0<\/small>[omer\u02c8ta]<\/a><\/span>)\u00a0is a\u00a0Southern Italian<\/a>\u00a0code of silence<\/a>\u00a0and code of\u00a0honor<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0conduct<\/a>\u00a0that places importance on silence in the face of questioning by authorities or outsiders; non-cooperation with authorities, the government, or outsiders, especially during criminal investigations; and willfully ignoring and generally avoiding interference with the illegal activities of others (i.e., not contacting law enforcement or the authorities when one is aware of, witness to, or even the victim of certain crimes). It originated and remains common in\u00a0Southern Italy<\/a>, where\u00a0banditry or brigandage<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Mafia<\/a>-type criminal organizations (like the\u00a0Camorra<\/a>,\u00a0Cosa Nostra<\/a>,\u00a0‘Ndrangheta<\/a>,\u00a0Sacra Corona Unita<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Societ\u00e0 foggiana<\/a>) have long been strong. Similar codes are also deeply rooted in other areas of the\u00a0Mediterranean<\/a>, including\u00a0Malta<\/a>,\u00a0Crete<\/a>\u00a0in Greece,\u00a0and\u00a0Corsica<\/a>, all of which share a common or similar historic culture with Southern Italy. Yet another poll, this time\u00a0from Quinnipiac<\/a>, shows the court\u2019s approval at an all-time low \u2014 29 percent. Don\u2019t they care? Whitehouse surmises that some justices resent anyone questioning their conduct.
