It could be headed by a\u00a0<b>chandler<\/b>. The office was subordinated to the kitchen, and only existed as a separate office in larger households.<\/p>\n<p>Whether a separate office or not, the function was naturally an important one, in a time before\u00a0<a title=\"Electric light\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_light\">electric light<\/a>, and when production of candles was often done privately. It was closely connected with other offices of the household, such as the\u00a0<a title=\"Ewery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ewery\">ewery<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Scullery (room)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scullery_(room)\">scullery<\/a>.\u00a0While this usage is obsolete today, the term can refer to a candle business. The current meaning of &#8220;chandler&#8221; is a person who sells candles.<\/p>\n<p>By the 18th century, most commercial chandlers dealt in candles, oils, soap, and even paint. As these provided ships&#8217; stores,\u00a0<i>chandlery<\/i>\u00a0came to refer to a shop selling\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Nautical\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nautical\">nautical<\/a>\u00a0items for ships and boats, although for a time they were called\u00a0<i><a title=\"Ship chandler\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ship_chandler\">ship-chandleries<\/a><\/i>\u00a0to distinguish them. Americans used the term\u00a0<i>chandlery<\/i>\u00a0for these ship-chandleries,<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chandlery#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0but tended to prefer the term\u00a0<i>chandler&#8217;s shop<\/i>.
