In case you don\u2019t already know, FAFO is an acronym for \u201ceff around and find out.\u201d It\u2019s a cheeky way to tell people that if they play with fire, they might get burned \u2014 or to announce they already have been. The Sioux Falls gang put a positive spin on FAFO, citing it as representing the \u201cgumption\u201d of their fellow students \u201cwhen encountering a novel challenge\u201d and noting that the Urban Dictionary calls the phrase an \u201cexclamation of confidence.\u201d It is that \u2014 but it\u2019s also a whole lot more.<em> [&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/01\/17\/fafo-2022-word-year-find-out\/?utm_campaign=wp_post_most&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;wpisrc=nl_most&amp;carta-url=https%3A%2F%2Fs2.washingtonpost.com%2Fcar-ln-tr%2F38df9cb%2F63c6d31def9bf67b23617e7e%2F59ee10d9ae7e8a504fd8ecd3%2F18%2F72%2F63c6d31def9bf67b23617e7e&amp;wp_cu=9055fac022b53fc12e7e48b712be9bf1%7C5C39B574A4EE418DE0530100007F3ABF\">Why the scary, funny, profane \u2018FAFO\u2019 was 2022\u2019s word of the year<\/a>,&#8221; Amanda Katz, <\/em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><em>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Yep, I cheaped out, not once, but twice: taking someone else&#8217;s word of the day, and going with an acronym. It can be a long, hard slog from acronym to actual word, and it&#8217;s not as a sexy as the onomatopoeia route, the portmanteau path, or even the rhyming Cockney slang path, but it&#8217;s a way to get on the map.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">And I&#8217;m not a fan, as the literal meaning doesn&#8217;t appear to include the obvious risk to reputation and even person.
