This would prevent the perceived injustice of a victory in the popular vote obviated by a loss in the Electoral College, as happened to candidates Hillary Clinton and Al Gore. Paul Hogarth on <em><strong>Daily Kos<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2023\/1\/12\/2146478\/-Fifteen-states-and-D-C-want-to-change-how-we-elect-presidents-Are-Minnesota-and-Michigan-next?detail=emaildkre&amp;pm_source=DKRE&amp;pm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has an update<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are already 72% [of the winning 270 electoral votes] of the way there\u2014with 15 states and the District of Columbia having passed a law joining the Compact, which totals 195 electoral votes. And in Colorado, after the governor and state legislature joined the Compact in 2019, it even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/11\/06\/931891674\/as-presidency-hinges-on-a-handful-of-states-some-have-made-a-popular-vote-pact\">survived a referendum challenge<\/a>\u00a0at the ballot box.<\/p>\n<p>Getting from 195 to 270 electoral votes will not be easy, as we already got the &#8220;low-hanging fruit&#8221; of large blue states\u00a0like California, New York, and Illinois. But the Compact\u00a0has\u00a0already picked up battleground states like Colorado and New Mexico, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/politics\/critics-of-electoral-college-push-for-popular-vote-compact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in recent years,<\/a>\u00a0the Compact\u00a0came very close to passing\u00a0in Nevada (where it passed both houses of the legislature), Maine, and Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>After the 2022 midterms, Democrats have a trifecta in Minnesota and Michigan\u2014so in 2023, these two states will be top priorities for the Compact. We also now have a Democratic majority in the Pennsylvania state House, and are likely just one more\u00a0election\u00a0cycle away from\u00a0picking up the legislature in Arizona.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting that he thinks the Arizona legislature will fall to the Democrats in 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Long-time readers may recall the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
