The average value of cryptocurrency trades per day has fallen from $131 billion in May to $57 billion in December \u2014 a drop of more than half, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coingecko.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CoinGecko<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wpds-c-cYdRxM wpds-c-cYdRxM-iPJLV-css font-copy\" data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Bitcoin\u2019s value has plummeted 65 percent this year, to around $17,500, although that\u2019s still more than it was worth for the majority of its existence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">And value.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_37972\" style=\"width: 195px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37972\" class=\"wp-image-37972\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?resize=185%2C247&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/huewhite.com\/umb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/PXL_20220731_003138461.jpg?resize=113%2C150&amp;ssl=1 113w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-37972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Looking a bit shabby, I fear.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">But so what? The questions are what are the trends, the tangible advantages and disadvantages, what is the sentiment?<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">I&#8217;m disinclined to vigorously dispute the subtle suggestion that cryptocurrencies are on the way out. The use of technology, particularly exciting new technologies and clever ideas<a href=\"#1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a> to attempt to resolve a problem, be it policy, social, or otherwise, is neither new nor surprising; only the nature of the sexy problem is really changing. In this case, getting corruptible government out of the business of controlling currencies seemed clever enough.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">But I think the nature of the problem was, and still is, really misunderstood, and the project driven by a fundamental mistrust of governments, which is not entirely without foundation. Look at those metallic tentacles!<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Unless you are one of the few looking forward to the appearance of our robotic overlords.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Cryptocurrencies may be the miserable grandchild of President Reagan&#8217;s remark that &#8230;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/factmyth.com\/factoids\/reagan-said-government-is-the-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem<\/em><\/a>, which is, notably, slightly out of context, but mistakenly taken to be ideological\u00a0<em>kant<\/em> by far too many people. I do suspect this is coming into focus for a lot of people, if only due to the grift and neglect to regulate the industry by, ah, <em>government<\/em>. In the end, the rampant corruption that appears to infest the industry may be an object lesson concerning the importance of government in the face of humanity&#8217;s indifference to ethics and morality, not to mention the inapplicability of Reagan&#8217;s quote to most situations.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">Which will be summarily ignored by all those infected by paranoia or profiting from crypto. Not only the individual grifters, but national adversaries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ransomware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ransomware<\/em><\/a> purveyors and users. The crash of crypto may put quite a few bad actors out of business.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a><sup>1<\/sup> Make no mistake, production of tokens, or coins, through &#8220;mining,&#8221; which is generally the process of solving complex problems that become harder over time, seemed clever back then. The entire &#8220;It sucks up <em>how much<\/em> energy?&#8221; problem with mining, at least in the <strong>proof-of-work<\/strong> mining paradigm, is not a matter of &#8220;they should have seen it coming,&#8221; but instead a common, if unrecognized, problem in the entire software industry, because energy consumption of algorithms, or implementations thereof, is not a topic of conversation for &#8220;coders&#8221; or for software engineers, or at least not that I&#8217;ve ever heard, excepting maybe in cryptocurrency mining, in AI, in the auto-driver algorithms of cars, where a drain on batteries is currently a real problem, and meteorological forecasting models, which naturally work on huge datasets fairly quickly.<\/p>\n<p>There are other mining paradigms, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/06\/06\/its-beginning-to-feel-like-jello\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>proof-of-space<\/strong><\/a> (how many hard drives do you own?), but this is, again, <em>consumption-oriented<\/em>. I am not plugged into the cryptocurrency implementation community, so I don&#8217;t know the answer to this question: Rather than using paradigms that fall into the <em>consumption<\/em> or <em>extraction<\/em> category, are there any paradigms that could be properly placed in a category labeled <em>production<\/em> or <em>contributing<\/em>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of several recent debacles, noises are starting to appear in the mainstream press suggesting the end of cryptocurrency could be in sight: Activity is lessening.
