{"id":37904,"date":"2022-12-11T09:37:16","date_gmt":"2022-12-11T15:37:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=37904"},"modified":"2022-12-11T09:37:16","modified_gmt":"2022-12-11T15:37:16","slug":"we-dont-need-no-steenkeeng-ethical-systems-ctd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2022\/12\/11\/we-dont-need-no-steenkeeng-ethical-systems-ctd\/","title":{"rendered":"We Don\u2019t Need No Steenkeeng Ethical Systems!, Ctd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long time readers may remember <a href=\"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2018\/11\/05\/we-dont-need-no-steenkeeng-ethical-systems\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my complaints<\/a> of 4+ years ago that then-Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R-GA) neither recused himself from management of the 2018 election in Georgia, nor did he resign from his position. Why? Because he was running for the Governor&#8217;s seat that year, and thus it was a reasonable argument that Kemp had a conflict of interest when it came to overseeing his own election.<\/p>\n<p>So why bring this up? Just moments ago, I discovered the same situation arose in the 2022 cycle, and I missed it. It involves Democrat, candidate for the Arizona governorship, and current Secretary of State for Arizona Katie Hobbs, who gained a narrow, narrow victory over former newscaster and <strong>MAGA<\/strong> Republican candidate Kari Lake. <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Kari_Lake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The margin is less than 1 full point<\/a>, and it took quite a long time to call the race.<\/p>\n<p>Sigh. It appears politics in Arizona is a messy business. Indeed, <em><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katie_Hobbs#Secretary_of_State_of_Arizona\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes<\/a> this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hobbs faced the Republican nominee, former\u00a0<a title=\"KSAZ-TV\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/KSAZ-TV\">KSAZ-TV<\/a>\u00a0news anchor\u00a0<a title=\"Kari Lake\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kari_Lake\">Kari Lake<\/a>, in the general election. She limited access to reporters, sometimes going out of her way to avoid them, and held small-scale campaign events.<sup id=\"cite_ref-49\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-50\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0She declined to debate Lake, saying she wanted to deny Lake the opportunity to spread\u00a0<a title=\"Attempts to overturn the 2020 United States presidential election\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Attempts_to_overturn_the_2020_United_States_presidential_election\">election denialism<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-51\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-52\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Hobbs narrowly defeated Lake with 50.3% of the vote.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_53-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-54\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0After the election, Lake refused to concede, and is assembling a legal team to contest the election results.<sup id=\"cite_ref-55\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-56\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-57\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Refusal to debate leaves voters less informed. While it&#8217;s true a website and other resources can inform the persistent voter as to candidate positions, a debate gives the audience an up-front display of performance in the face of confrontation, and may even demonstrate inconsistency, ignorance, or ideological <em>kant<\/em> infesting the positions of the candidate.<\/p>\n<p>By refusing to recuse or resign for this election, Hobbs has given Lake a leg to stand on, although I don&#8217;t know that there was any more than that.
