In 1976, the\u00a0feminist<\/a>\u00a0author\u00a0Diana E. H. Russell<\/a> first defined the term as “the killing of females by males because they are female.” Others\u00a0broaden the meaning of the term by including the killing of females by females. In many\u00a0Central American<\/a>\u00a0countries, where\u00a0organized crime<\/a>\u00a0is a prevalent issue, the term femicide is used in reference to the violent killings of women and girls which are frequently perpetrated by\u00a0gang<\/a>\u00a0members, a crime which is primarily committed in order to stoke fear and compliance among\u00a0civilians<\/a>.
