Between 7 million and 23 million Americans \u2014 including 1 million who can no longer work \u2014 are suffering from the long-term effects of infection with the virus, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-22-105666\">government estimates<\/a>. Those numbers are expected to rise as covid becomes an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2022\/01\/15\/living-with-the-virus\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_18&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_14\">endemic disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" data-el=\"text\">The last <strong>US Census<\/strong> has us numbering around 330 million, so one infectious disease is seriously affecting <strong>nearly 10%<\/strong>, on the high end, of us.
