In its earliest form, those who were unable to obtain an adequate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/common_law\" aria-label=\"wex - common law\">common law<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/remedy\" aria-label=\"wex - remedy\">remedy<\/a>\u00a0could petition the King of England, who would refer the case to the Lord Chancellor. Over time, Chancery grew from an administrative body within the King\u2019s Council to a separate court with its own formalized procedures and doctrines. Compared to the increasingly rigid courts of common law, the Court of Chancery provided more adaptable remedies based on notions of moral fairness. While courts of common law were mostly limited to providing monetary damages, the Court of Chancery could order forms of equitable relief such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/specific_performance\" aria-label=\"wex - specific performance\">specific performance<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/injunction\" aria-label=\"wex - injunction\">injunctions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the early American colonies preserved the distinction between common law and equity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/wex\/jurisdiction\" aria-label=\"wex - jurisdiction\">jurisdiction<\/a>, and some states eventually established chancery courts with exclusive jurisdiction over matters in equity. Today though, only a few states maintain separate chancery courts.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/courts.delaware.gov\/chancery\/jurisdiction.aspx\" aria-label=\"Delaware\u2019s Court of Chancery from courts.delaware.gov\">Delaware\u2019s Court of Chancery<\/a>\u00a0is perhaps the most prominent for its handling of corporate disputes and fiduciary litigation involving trusts and estates.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/courts.ms.gov\/aboutcourts\/aboutthecourts.php\" aria-label=\"Mississippi Chancery Court from courts.ms.gov\">Mississippi Chancery Court<\/a>\u00a0has jurisdiction over adoptions, custody disputes, divorces, guardianships, and sanity hearings. Both Mississippi and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tncourts.gov\/courts\/circuit-criminal-chancery-courts\/about\" aria-label=\"Tennessee from www.tncourts.gov\">Tennessee<\/a>\u00a0give their chancery courts jurisdiction to hear name change petitions.
