{"id":357,"date":"2015-03-26T18:46:23","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T23:46:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=357"},"modified":"2015-03-26T18:46:23","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T23:46:23","slug":"in-a-nutshell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2015\/03\/26\/in-a-nutshell\/","title":{"rendered":"In a nutshell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At The Weekly Standard, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/fix-gop-don-t-abandon-it_898649.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jay Cost claims<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As I argued <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weeklystandard.com\/blogs\/why-gop-insiders-thwart-conservative-reformers_888858.html\">here<\/a>, and in my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Republic-More-Government-Political-Corruption\/dp\/1594037272\/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=jacosbl-20&amp;linkCode=w00&amp;linkId=RPZGCESLD4AAB2W6&amp;creativeASIN=1594037272\" rel=\"nofollow\">new book<\/a>, the Republican party has been aligned with big business for almost 150 years. In many respects, this is a good thing for conservatism. People who are employed by a business, after all, do not need the government to prosper. And big business employs a lot of people, so conservatives have common cause.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s a lovely delusion &#8211; but only that.\u00a0 Without the government, you do not have national defense.\u00a0 You might be able to have private police &#8211; but, speaking as an engineer, that system is naturally unstable.\u00a0 You might have private fire fighting service, but that appears to be uncommon (I have not tracked that phenomenon since my days reading <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">REASON Magazine<\/a>).\u00a0 You don&#8217;t have a national currency &#8211; arguing that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bitcoin\" target=\"_blank\">Bitcoin<\/a> makes government unnecessary merely highlights the fact that the technologies supporting Bitcoin &#8211; namely computers &#8211; were developed only with critical government support.<\/p>\n<p>Small points?\u00a0 Maybe he&#8217;s a bit sloppy?\u00a0 Perhaps; yet all of the inaccuracies, the hidden biases, they all add up, until the entire paragraph, superficially comprehensible, becomes incoherent when read in depth.\u00a0 Searching for some even minor truth, and I become overerwhelmed at how a collection of fallacies masquerade as some self-evident truth.\u00a0 And at how his readership will swallow it without blinking.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calvin_Coolidge\" target=\"_blank\">President Calvin Coolidge<\/a> said it sooner:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisdayinquotes.com\/2010\/01\/business-of-america-is-business.html\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;the chief business of the American people is business.&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At The Weekly Standard, Jay Cost claims, As I argued here, and in my new book, the Republican party has been aligned with big business for almost 150 years.
