These are principally caused by sound waves that are continuously driven and damped by convection near the Sun&#8217;s surface. It is similar to\u00a0<a title=\"Seismology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seismology\">geoseismology<\/a>, or\u00a0<a title=\"Asteroseismology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asteroseismology\">asteroseismology<\/a>\u00a0(also coined by Gough), which are respectively the studies of the\u00a0<a title=\"Earth\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earth\">Earth<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a title=\"Star\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Star\">stars<\/a>\u00a0through their oscillations. While the Sun&#8217;s oscillations were first detected in the early 1960s, it was only in the mid-1970s that it was realized that the oscillations propagated throughout the Sun and could allow scientists to study the Sun&#8217;s deep interior. The modern field is separated into\u00a0<b>global helioseismology<\/b>, which studies the Sun&#8217;s resonant modes directly,\u00a0and\u00a0<b>local helioseismology<\/b>, which studies the propagation of the component waves near the Sun&#8217;s surface.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helioseismology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Seems obscure, doesn&#8217;t it?
