Between the expected Russian invasion of Ukraine and storms on the Sun, this could be an exciting week. Oh, you hadn’t heard of the latter? Here’s Spaceweather.com<\/em><\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n

HERE IT COMES:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The source of last week’s\u00a0huge farside explosion<\/a>\u00a0is moving closer to the Earthside of the sun. NASA’s STEREO-A spacecraft is stationed just behind the sun’s eastern limb, and it has caught sight of a large ultraviolet hotspot approaching the visible edge of the solar disk:<\/p>\n

STEREO-A does not have a white light telescope, so we cannot know for sure that the “hotspot” is actually a sunspot. But it almost certainly is.<\/p>\n

Whatever it is, it’s big enough to affect the way the surface of the sun vibrates. Researchers at Stanford University are\u00a0using helioseismology<\/a>\u00a0to map the farside of the sun.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
