To be turned into a cure, it would have to be combined with a second kind of medicine that kills the immune cells churning out viruses. No such medicine is yet proven to work, although some experimental versions are in development.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that dormant viruses could be reactivated before being destroyed is sometimes known as a \u201ckick and kill\u201d strategy. In the latest work,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doherty.edu.au\/people\/professor-sharon-lewin\">Sharon Lewin<\/a>\u00a0at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and her colleagues studied people with HIV who also had cancer and were being treated with a relatively new medicine called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg23431282-500-tumourtracking-drug-that-kills-cancer-approved-in-the-us\/\">pembrolizumab<\/a>.<em> [&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2306093-cancer-drug-could-one-day-help-cure-hiv-by-waking-up-dormant-viruses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cancer drug could one day help cure HIV by waking up dormant viruses<\/a>,&#8221; Clare Wilson, <\/em><strong>NewScientist<\/strong><em> (5 February 2022)]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently, a dormant virus, such as HIV when it&#8217;s in hiding in immune cells, is not vulnerable to drug therapies.
