Ted Cruz on Wednesday argued he is particularly well-positioned to win the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, citing his second-place finish behind then-candidate Donald Trump in the party\u2019s 2016 primary.<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">The remarks from Cruz (R-Texas) came in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Truth_Gazette\/status\/1473664240959565824?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"an interview with The Truth Gazette (opens in a new window)\">an interview with The Truth Gazette<\/a>, a conservative news service operated by 15-year-old Brilyn Hollyhand. Asked by Hollyhand whether he would consider launching another bid for the White House, Cruz responded: \u201cAbsolutely. In a heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"story-enhancement\"><\/aside>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">\u201cYou know, I ran in 2016. It was the most fun I\u2019ve ever had in my life. We had a very crowded field. We had 17 candidates in the race \u2014 a very strong field. And I ended up placing second\u201d Cruz said.<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s a reason historically that the runner-up is almost always the next nominee,\u201d Cruz continued. \u201cAnd that\u2019s been true going back to Nixon or Reagan or McCain or Romney that has played out repeatedly. You come in with just an enormous base of support.\u201d<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/12\/22\/cruz-2024-republican-presidential-nomination-525973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Politico<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"page-content__row page-content__row--story main-section\" data-content-section=\"4\">\n<div class=\"container container--story story-layout--fixed-fluid\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story\">\n<div class=\"container__row container__row--story story-layout--fluid-fixed\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story center-horizontally\">\n<div class=\"story-text\">\n<p data-content-child-index=\"0-0\">A number of historical events could be argued to be against him winning, from his wilting sycophantic behavior towards the former President, indicating a lack of backbone and morals, to the giant <em>lacunae<\/em> of personal charisma. But politics is really a <em>What have you done for me lately?<\/em> profession, and so how has that been going?<\/p>\n<p data-content-child-index=\"0-0\">First, as of a few days ago, he thinks an impeachment of President Biden is likely:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sen.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/ted-cruz\/\">Ted Cruz<\/a>\u00a0said that a Republican-led House after the 2022 elections likely will consider impeaching President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\">Biden<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cmultiple grounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the latest episode of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/biden\/\">his<\/a>\u00a0podcast \u201cVerdict with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/ted-cruz\/\">Ted Cruz<\/a>,\u201d the Texas Republican said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/ted-cruz\/\">he<\/a>\u00a0was extremely confident that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/ted-cruz\/\">his<\/a>\u00a0party will win Congressional majorities and that this would open the door for retaliation against the Democrats for impeaching then-President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we take the House, which I said is overwhelmingly likely, then I think we will see serious investigations of the Biden administration,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/newsfront\/tedcruz-gop-joebiden-impeachment\/2022\/01\/03\/id\/1050874\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> co-hosts Michael Knowles and Liz Wheeler, saying the odds were 90% and \u201cmay even be higher.\u201d\u00a0<em>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/jan\/3\/ted-cruz-multiple-grounds-consider-joe-biden-impea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>The Washington Times<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a long range bomb. He can predict impeachment all he wants, but if he wants to be President, he has to appeal to both the independents and an increasingly extremist base that may not find him extreme enough for their own tastes. If the Republicans manage to scale the mountain and take the House, there is no guarantee there&#8217;ll be anything more than a theatrical bit of political investigation, complete with <strong>BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS<\/strong> and lots of <strong>PRESS CONFERENCES<\/strong>. But, barring actual corruption in the Biden Administration, which I think is both unlikely and deeply foolish for anyone on Biden&#8217;s team to attempt, it&#8217;ll all be a failure, and soon the primary voters will be asking <em>Where did the promised impeachment go?<\/em> And bringing a fraudulent impeachment charge will not go down well with the independent voters, who don&#8217;t want to be bothered with dumb political shit. Only the safest Republican seats can risk such antics.<\/p>\n<p>But that seems like weak tea against this incident, from yesterday:<\/p>\n<section class=\"page-content__row page-content__row--story\">\n<div class=\"container container--story story-layout--fluid-fixed\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story summary-middle\">\n<div class=\"container__row container__row--story story-layout--fixed-fluid\">\n<div class=\"container__column container__column--story center-horizontally\">\n<div class=\"story-text\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">Ted Cruz on Thursday walked back his use of the word \u201cterrorist\u201d when describing the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol during an intense back and forth with Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who repeatedly questioned the validity of the Republican senator\u2019s explanation.<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">Cruz was lambasted during Carlson\u2019s Wednesday night show for describing Jan. 6 as \u201ca violent terrorist attack on the Capitol.\u201d During his Thursday night appearance, when Carlson asked him why he used the word &#8220;terrorist,&#8221; Cruz brushed off his previous phrasing as \u201csloppy\u201d and \u201cfrankly dumb.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">But Carlson didn\u2019t accept that answer, arguing that the attack was not terrorism and questioning Cruz&#8217;s motivations.<\/p>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\">\u201cYou told that lie on purpose, and I\u2019m wondering why you did,\u201d Carlson said.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/01\/06\/ted-cruz-jan-6-terrorist-tucker-carlson-526725\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Politico<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Carlson is a point person for the former President, and whether or not he runs in 2024, Trump has little use for Cruz, who he has abused a number of times, and received Cruz&#8217;s whimpering agreement in return, including Cruz&#8217;s craven leading of the January 6th insurrection in the Senate by objecting to the acceptance of electoral votes.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Cruz misspoke? His defense:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\" data-content-child-index=\"0-2\">\u201cWhat I was referring to are the limited number of people who engaged in violent attacks against police officers. I think you and I both agree that if you assault a police officer, you should go to jail,&#8221; Cruz said. &#8220;I wasn&#8217;t saying the thousands of peaceful protesters supporting Donald Trump are somehow terrorists. I wasn\u2019t saying the millions of patriots across the country supporting Trump are terrorists.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-content-child-index=\"0-2\">But Carlson wasn&#8217;t buying.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\" story-text__paragraph\" data-content-child-index=\"0-3\">\u201cWhat you just said doesn\u2019t make sense,\u201d Carlson fired back, accusing the senator of playing into Democrats\u2019 narratives. During the segment, the show&#8217;s chyron read: \u201cTUCKER TAKES ON SENATOR TED CRUZ.\u201d (There have been murmurs that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/07\/02\/tucker-carlson-2024-republicans-348334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" aria-label=\"Carlson, too, might run in 2024 (opens in a new window)\">Carlson, too, might run in 2024<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-content-child-index=\"0-3\">I think Cruz will run in 2024 &#8211; and lose. I have no idea who will win the nomination, but Cruz, it appears, has been selected for destruction by the leader of the Republican Party.
