{"id":34992,"date":"2022-01-06T12:59:32","date_gmt":"2022-01-06T18:59:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=34992"},"modified":"2022-01-06T12:59:32","modified_gmt":"2022-01-06T18:59:32","slug":"that-next-conspiracy-theory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2022\/01\/06\/that-next-conspiracy-theory\/","title":{"rendered":"That Next Conspiracy Theory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a few days behind in my <em><strong>xkcd<\/strong><\/em> reading, which explains why I haven&#8217;t mentioned <a href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/2558\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this<\/a> before.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/imgs.xkcd.com\/comics\/rapid_test_results.png?resize=412%2C382&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"412\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s the <em>tool tip<\/em> that caught my attention, though:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A solid red area with two white lines means that you have been infected with the anti-coronavirus, COVID+19. which will cure anyone you have close contact with.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Conspiracy theorists love those hidden messages, don&#8217;t they? After all, only those folks smart enough to find the messages will then learn &#8220;the truth.&#8221; It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Confirmation_bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>confirmation bias<\/em><\/a> in action, isn&#8217;t it? And what&#8217;s better than a tool tip that requires the cursor to be hovering over a cartoon and goes away when you move your cursor? Add in the context of <strong>COVID<\/strong>, which has a rich environment of conspiracy theories, all quite ridiculous &#8211; a redundant remark, I&#8217;m sure &#8211; and this tool tip just seems to scream <strong>MISINTERPRET ME! QUICK!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maybe it&#8217;s already happened. I refuse to go look. I haven&#8217;t seen it mentioned, yet, in <a href=\"https:\/\/centerforinquiry.org\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>The Morning Heresy<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which is a good source for pointers to conspiracy theory madness.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m a few days behind in my xkcd reading, which explains why I haven&#8217;t mentioned this before.
