Shibboleth<\/em>:<\/p>\n

A\u00a0shibboleth<\/b>\u00a0(\/\u02c8<\/span>\u0283<\/span>\u026a<\/span>b<\/span>\u0259l<\/span>\u025b<\/span>\u03b8<\/span>,-\u026a<\/span>\u03b8<\/span>\/<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(\"About<\/a>listen<\/a><\/span><\/span>)<\/span><\/span>)\u00a0is any\u00a0custom<\/a>\u00a0or tradition, usually a choice of phrasing or even a single word, that distinguishes one group of people from another.\u00a0Shibboleths have been used throughout history in many societies as\u00a0passwords<\/a>, simple ways of self-identification, signaling loyalty and affinity, maintaining traditional segregation, or protecting from real or perceived threats. That compromise certainly won\u2019t appease the hard-liners. In fact, if the church\u2019s efforts to expunge \u201cMormon\u201d from our collective vocabulary have been successful in any way, it\u2019s this: driving a significant wedge among our people. \u201cMormon\u201d has become a shibboleth, an immediate shorthand for Latter-day Saints to size up one another\u2019s obedience and orthodoxy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And a bit of etiology!<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a cautionary tale about shibboleths in Judges 12 in the Bible. Basically, the story is that after the Gileadites defeat their rival Ephraimites in battle, the surviving Ephraimites attempt to flee by way of crossing the Jordan River to safety.<\/p>\n

The victorious Gileadites are not having it. They want to make sure they hunt down every single escaped Ephraimite, so they set up a checkpoint at the river, which they now control. The password is \u201cShibboleth,\u201d a word they pronounce differently than the Ephraimites, who can\u2019t quite muster the \u201csh\u201d consonant at the beginning. Success! The litmus test works like a charm, enabling them to identify and slaughter every fleeing Ephraimite. This story has given us the word \u201cshibboleth\u201d to refer to language that divides one group from another.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
