Depending on the definition, the telson is either considered to be the final\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Segment (biology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Segment_(biology)\">segment<\/a>\u00a0of the arthropod body, or an additional division that is not a true segment on account of not arising in the embryo from\u00a0<a title=\"Teloblast\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Teloblast\">teloblast<\/a>\u00a0areas as other segments.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Telson#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It never carries any\u00a0<a title=\"Appendage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Appendage\">appendages<\/a>, but a forked &#8220;tail&#8221; called the caudal furca may be present.
