{"id":34109,"date":"2021-08-25T18:46:59","date_gmt":"2021-08-25T23:46:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=34109"},"modified":"2021-08-25T18:46:59","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T23:46:59","slug":"maybe-not-so-many-oreos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/08\/25\/maybe-not-so-many-oreos\/","title":{"rendered":"Maybe Not So Many Oreos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Walter Einenkel on <strong><em>Daily Kos<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2021\/8\/24\/2047906\/-Nabisco-workers-across-country-on-strike-after-company-decides-to-spend-profits-on-stock-buy-backs?pm_source=story_sidebar&amp;pm_medium=web&amp;pm_campaign=most-shared\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> on the tactics of the owners of <em><strong>Nabisco<\/strong><\/em>&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>While record numbers of families struggled through lockdowns and steep unemployment, the wealthiest individuals and companies have enjoyed record profits during the global coronavirus pandemic.\u00a0One such example is Nabisco\u2019s parent company, Mondel\u0113z International.\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/mondelez-international\/fortune500\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fortune<\/a><\/em>\u00a0says that Mondel\u0113z International pulls in more than $3.5b in profits every year.\u00a0<em>The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0reports that in the second quarter of this year, Mondel\u0113z reported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/aug\/23\/nabisco-factory-workers-striking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cmore than $5.5bn in profits and\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/earnings\/call-transcripts\/2021\/07\/27\/mondelez-international-inc-mdlz-q2-2021-earnings-c\/\">spent $1.5bn<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/aug\/23\/nabisco-factory-workers-striking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0on stock buybacks in the first half of 2021.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Belgian businessman\u00a0Dirk van de Put made just under $17 million as CEO of the confectionery, food, beverage, and snack company.<\/p>\n<p>The median annual pay for a Mondel\u0113z International employee? Just $31,000.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of August, around 200 Nabisco bakery union workers in Portland staged a walkout. Three weeks into the strike, union workers have joined them in Colorado, Virginia, and Chicago, Illinois\u2014the latter is where Mondel\u0113z International is headquartered. The striking workers are represented by the\u00a0Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers (BCTGM). Cameron Taylor,\u00a0a business agent for Local 354,\u00a0told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/business\/2021\/08\/strike-at-ne-portland-nabisco-bakery-enters-second-week.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oregon Live<\/a> that the strike results from workers\u2019 dissatisfaction with ongoing contract negotiations with the company. \u201cThis company made record profits throughout the pandemic, and then they come to the table and they want concessions.
