{"id":33602,"date":"2021-07-08T20:41:47","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T01:41:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=33602"},"modified":"2021-07-08T20:41:47","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T01:41:47","slug":"word-of-the-day-705","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/07\/08\/word-of-the-day-705\/","title":{"rendered":"Word Of The Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Transhumanism<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Transhumanism<\/b>\u00a0is a philosophical movement, the proponents of which advocate and predict the enhancement of the human condition by developing and making widely available sophisticated technologies able to greatly enhance longevity, mood and cognitive abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Transhumanist thinkers study the potential benefits and dangers of\u00a0<a title=\"Emerging technologies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emerging_technologies\">emerging technologies<\/a>\u00a0that could overcome fundamental human limitations as well as the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Technoethics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Technoethics\">ethics<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0of using such technologies.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Some transhumanists believe that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with abilities so greatly expanded from the current condition as to merit the label of\u00a0<a title=\"Posthuman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Posthuman#Transhumanism\">posthuman<\/a>\u00a0beings.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transhumanism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/nearearth.wordpress.com\/2021\/04\/03\/the-big-thing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Big Thing<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; Paul Fidalgo, <strong><em>Near Earth Object<\/em><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Long story short, I buckled down and finished the damn thing, and it\u2019s now the cover story for the April-May 2021 issue of Free Inquiry magazine. It\u2019s 11,300 words-and-change comparing and weighing two views of humanity\u2019s future: transhumanism (we\u2019ll all be saved and improved by technology) and \u201ccollapsitarianism\u201d (we\u2019ve blown it and civilization will crumble).<\/p>\n<p>Why these two? Because I feel pulled toward both so strongly, despite their disparate outlooks.
