Variety<\/strong><\/em> reports Georgia<\/a> has run into a roadblock when it comes to passing “religious freedom” laws: a behemoth named DISNEY<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Walt Disney Co. and Marvel Studios<\/a> indicated opposition to a Georgia<\/a> religious liberty bill pending before Gov. Nathan Deal, saying that they will take their business elsewhere \u201cshould any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law.\u201d<\/p>\n

With generous tax incentives, Georgia has become a production hub, with Marvel currently shooting\u00a0\u201cGuardians of the Galaxy 2\u201d at Pinewood Studios outside Atlanta. \u201cCaptain America: Civil War\u201d shot there last summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law,\u201d a Disney spokesman said on Wednesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The MPAA<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is in the same corner. From the March 17 edition of myAJC<\/strong><\/em> (paywall) comes a summary<\/a> of the bill, as well as reaction:<\/p>\n

The Georgia Legislature\u2019s sudden passage of a bill intended to shield opponents of same-sex marriage from last year\u2019s landmark Supreme Court ruling ignited a fierce and growing pushback from corporate leaders and gay rights activists urging Gov. Nathan Deal to block the bill.<\/p>\n

Some of Georgia\u2019s most influential companies warned of devastating consequences if Deal were to sign the \u201creligious liberty\u201d legislation that swept through the statehouse Wednesday in mere hours, and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed warned it would cause \u201cterrible harm\u201d to the state\u2019s business reputation.<\/p>\n

At the same time, supporters rallied behind the measure. Religious conservatives showered the Legislature with praise, and the state GOP, noting that its activists overwhelmingly passed a resolution supporting the bill, applauded lawmakers \u201cfor listening to grassroots Republicans and for working together to pass this vitally important piece of legislation.\u201d …<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the conservative Faith and Freedom Coalition launched robo-calls urging people to call Deal\u2019s office and tell the governor to support the bill. Virginia Galloway, the group\u2019s Southern regional director, rejected as \u201chyperbole\u201d statements by the business community and others that the bill allows discrimination.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is very reasonable and it respects the rights of all people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Metro Atlanta Chamber, the state\u2019s most influential business voice, said the measure is \u201cin conflict with the values of diversity and inclusion that Georgians hold dear\u201d and could erode the state\u2019s business reputation. The Georgia Hotel & Lodging Association called for the \u201cbest legal minds\u201d to examine the potential unintended consequences.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, it hurts Georgians because it impacts jobs,\u201d said Larry Gellerstedt, the CEO of Cousins Properties and a recent past chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber\u2019s board. \u201cI don\u2019t know how anyone can disagree with that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
