Not a lot \u2014 certainly not enough that you\u2019d feel it \u2014 but\u00a0just\u00a0enough that seismologists on multiple continents\u00a0get a measurable little \u201cblip\u201d\u00a0on their detectors.\u00a0But even though this\u00a0pulse has been observed for decades, researchers don\u2019t agree on what\u2019s causing it.\u00a0The\u00a0mystery surrounding the\u00a0phenomenon\u00a0even has\u00a0its own\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"sc-8pb8t8-0 bmSGPg ydadvh-0 eBaWns\" href=\"https:\/\/m.xkcd.com\/2344\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">XKCD web\u00a0comic<\/span><\/a><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">The pulse \u2014 or \u201cmicroseism\u201d in geologist lingo \u2014\u00a0was\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"sc-8pb8t8-0 bmSGPg ydadvh-0 eBaWns\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.geoscienceworld.org\/ssa\/bssa\/article-abstract\/52\/3\/507\/101309\/A-worldwide-storm-of-microseisms-with-periods-of?redirectedFrom=fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">first documented in the\u00a0early\u00a01960s<\/span><\/a><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">\u00a0by a researcher named Jack Oliver, then at the\u00a0Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory.\u00a0He\u2019s best known for\u00a0his\u00a0later work that supplied some important early\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"sc-8pb8t8-0 bmSGPg ydadvh-0 eBaWns\" href=\"https:\/\/news.cornell.edu\/stories\/2011\/01\/jack-oliver-plate-tectonics-pioneer-dies-87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">evidence for shifting tectonic plates<\/span><\/a><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">. Oliver figured\u00a0out that\u00a0the pulse\u00a0was coming from somewhere\u00a0\u201cin the southern or equatorial Atlantic Ocean\u201d\u00a0and that it was stronger\u00a0in the Northern Hemisphere&#8217;s summer months\u00a0(or, the Southern Hemisphere&#8217;s winter).\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And so what&#8217;s going on?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">Perplexed, the team [Greg Bensen,\u00a0 Nikolai Shapiro] examined the blips from every possible angle. Was something wrong with their instruments? Or their analyses? Or was this seismic activity really happening? All signs pointed to the latter. They were even able to triangulate the pulse to its origin: A single source in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western coast of Africa. They dug up Oliver\u2019s and Holcomb\u2019s work, too, and published a study <\/span><a class=\"sc-8pb8t8-0 bmSGPg ydadvh-0 eBaWns\" href=\"http:\/\/ciei.colorado.edu\/pubs\/2006\/3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">in\u00a02006\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"oahvym-0 jNeEga\">Geophysical Research Letters<\/span><\/a><span class=\"oahvym-0 kijmGk\">. But even since then, no one has really confirmed the cause of the regular seismic activity. Though many assume it\u2019s caused by waves, some hold out that it\u2019s caused by volcanic activity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, we don&#8217;t know. And that&#8217;s what makes this fascinating. Waves? Volcano on a ridiculous timer?<\/p>\n<p>Alien spaceship? No, of course not. That&#8217;d be too easy.<\/p>\n<p>I hope they figure this out sometime soon.
