There was a terrible drought, then the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/07\/30\/seven-months-after-bush-fires-australia-is-still-devastated\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2\">worst bush fires<\/a>\u00a0ever recorded. A flood came next. Now it\u2019s the turn of the mice.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of the mouse plague is hard to comprehend. In the western districts of New South Wales (NSW), the country\u2019s most populous state, millions of mice are now on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.feralscan.org.au\/mousealert\/\">march<\/a>. There are also serious infestations in southern Queensland, Victoria and South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>On social media, farmers post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NSWYF\/status\/1371955182129455105\">videos<\/a>\u00a0showing the swarm in action, while farming organizations say the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nswfarmers.org.au\/NSWFA\/Posts\/Media_Releases\/mr.028.21.aspx\">cost<\/a> is already in the millions.<em> [Richard Glover, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/04\/29\/australia-mice-plague-animals\/?utm_campaign=wp_post_most&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;wpisrc=nl_most&amp;carta-url=https:\/\/s2.washingtonpost.com\/car-ln-tr\/321dea8\/608c26a59d2fdae3023e2ba8\/59ee10d9ae7e8a504fd8ecd3\/17\/70\/608c26a59d2fdae3023e2ba8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-el=\"text\">Oh dear. <em>Oh dear<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theland.com.au\/story\/7180996\/urgent-support-needed-to-stop-mouse-plague\/\">Country Women\u2019s Association<\/a>, farmers have been bitten in their beds, with some protecting themselves from incursions by placing each leg of their bed or child\u2019s cot in a bucket of sand or water.<\/p>\n<p>In three towns, the mice even managed to invade the local\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-03-18\/mice-plague-nsw-worsens-and--affecting-crops\/13255486\">hospital<\/a>, biting patients.<\/p>\n<p>Then, a month ago, there was a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthobservatory.nasa.gov\/images\/148093\/historic-floods-in-new-south-wales\">second flood<\/a>, which some thought might drown the mice in their burrows. The impact varied. In some places, the rain stabilized mouse numbers, but in other places the populations\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-04-24\/mouse-plague-spreads-farmers-warned-not-to-bet-on-winter\/100089278\">continued<\/a>\u00a0to boom. Worse, the flooding drove the mice\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-03-24\/nsw-floods-rain-might-not-end-mouse-plague-in-regions\/100023508\">indoors<\/a>, with some eating through doors and the silicon around windows to gain entry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-el=\"text\">And then this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not that they don\u2019t now have some competition. In breaking news, the mouse plague has now created a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theland.com.au\/story\/7220057\/snakes-on-the-plains-bigger-fatter-reptiles-thriving-with-more-food-better-cover\/\">snake plague<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don&#8217;t think of it as a joke.
