Sans-culottes<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The\u00a0sans-culottes<\/b><\/i>\u00a0(French:\u00a0<\/small>[s\u0251\u0303kyl\u0254t]<\/a><\/span>, literally “without\u00a0breeches<\/a>“) were the\u00a0common people<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0lower classes<\/a>\u00a0in late 18th-century\u00a0France<\/a>, a great many of whom became radical and militant partisans of the\u00a0French Revolution<\/a>\u00a0in response to their\u00a0poor quality of life<\/a>\u00a0under the\u00a0Ancien R\u00e9gime<\/a><\/i>.\u00a0The word sans-culotte, which is opposed to that of the\u00a0aristocrat<\/a>, seems to have been used for the first time on 28 February 1791 by officer\u00a0Gauthier<\/a>\u00a0in a derogatory sense, speaking about a “sans-culottes army”.\u00a0The word came into vogue during the\u00a0demonstration of 20 June 1792<\/a>.\u00a0[Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
