{"id":3267,"date":"2016-03-12T15:32:36","date_gmt":"2016-03-12T21:32:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=3267"},"modified":"2016-03-12T15:32:36","modified_gmt":"2016-03-12T21:32:36","slug":"a-tool-for-your-imagination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2016\/03\/12\/a-tool-for-your-imagination\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tool for Your Imagination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Brent Hecht of the University of Minnesota\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cs.umn.edu\/news\/filter\/highlights\/new-search-engine-atlasify-tells-you-what-where-and-why?j=919513&amp;e=hue.white@gmail.com&amp;l=21346_HTML&amp;u=24203795&amp;mid=6325307&amp;jb=7\" target=\"_blank\">introduces<\/a> Atlasify:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In Hecht\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/grouplens.org\/blog\/atlasify-towards-the-geography-of-everything\/\">announcement on the GroupLens blog<\/a>, he describes Atlasify as \u201ca system that lets you make a map of almost anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And when Hecht says \u201canything,\u201d he means it.\u00a0 The examples he demonstrated during a recent interview with CS&amp;E ranged from \u201cbadminton\u201d and \u201ccountry music\u201d to \u201cWorld War II\u201d and \u201cStar Trek.\u201d\u00a0 Additionally, he showed many more sample queries that he and his team have set up on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasify.com\/\">Atlasify homepage<\/a> so users can see the search engine in action.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike many popular search engines that generate a list of hyperlinks, each Atlasify query generates its own, unique interactive heat map for users to explore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAtlasify allows you to create maps there are no atlases for,\u201d said Hecht.\u00a0 \u201cFor example, there isn\u2019t an atlas for \u2018ice hockey,\u2019 but we can make one\u2014in fact, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasify.com\/index.html?query=Ice%20hockey&amp;category=1\">we made one.\u201d<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h6>(University of Minnesota&#8217;s Computer Science &amp; Engineering newsletter)<\/h6>\n<p>I mucked about with it for a few minutes. \u00a0It&#8217;s a neat concept that needs some refinement. For example, the Geography category is &#8230; too political. \u00a0That is, information is mapped to political boundaries, rather than discovering a more information context. \u00a0In the below sample, I asked for the Geography of Iron Ore. Here in Minnesota, iron ore is a big part of our history, but only up in the Arrowhead section of the state, in the northeast; the mined material would then be sent to Duluth for shipping.
