{"id":32636,"date":"2021-04-10T17:49:52","date_gmt":"2021-04-10T22:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=32636"},"modified":"2021-04-10T17:49:52","modified_gmt":"2021-04-10T22:49:52","slug":"keep-your-head-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/04\/10\/keep-your-head-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep Your Head Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>Spaceweather.com<\/strong><\/em> reports on <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceweather.com\/archive.php?view=1&amp;day=10&amp;month=04&amp;year=2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new research<\/a> regarding the frequency of devastating <em><strong>CMEs<\/strong><\/em> (Coronal Mass Ejections) hitting the Earth:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you think you&#8217;re safe from geomagnetic storms, think again.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1029\/2020SW002579\">A new study<\/a>\u00a0just published in the research journal\u00a0<em>Space Weather<\/em>\u00a0finds that powerful storms may be twice as likely as previously thought.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Love of the US Geological Survey, who authored the study, analyzed Earth&#8217;s strongest geomagnetic storms since the early 1900s. Previous studies looked back only to the 1950s. The extra data led to a surprise:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A storm as intense as, say,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spaceweatherarchive.com\/2021\/03\/12\/the-great-quebec-blackout\/\">the Qu\u00e9bec Blackout of 1989<\/a>\u00a0is predicted to occur, on average, about every four solar cycles.
