Antinomianism<\/em>:<\/b><\/p>\n

Antinomianism<\/b>\u00a0(Ancient Greek<\/a>: \u1f00\u03bd\u03c4\u03af, “against” and \u03bd\u03cc\u03bc\u03bf\u03c2, “law”) is any view which rejects laws or\u00a0legalism<\/a>\u00a0and argues against moral, religious or social norms (Latin:\u00a0mores<\/a>), or is at least considered to do so. The term has both religious and secular meanings.<\/p>\n

In some\u00a0Christian<\/a>\u00a0belief systems, an antinomian is one who takes the principle of\u00a0salvation<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0faith<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0divine grace<\/a>\u00a0to the point of asserting that the saved are not bound to follow the moral law contained in the\u00a0Ten Commandments<\/a>. Salvation is never \u201cregardless of others.\u201d It\u2019s true, for example, that\u00a0Paul instructs the Philippians<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cwork out your own salvation in fear and trembling,\u201d but that\u2019s a way of saying \u201cmind your own business\u201d and even that advice comes in a community setting. Christian scripture and theology is abundantly clear that salvation is for the world, not individual believers without respect to the people around them. Otherwise, we would have justification for\u00a0antinomianism<\/a>, and that\u2019s surely not what Erickson wants.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
