It was founded primarily by the Russian immigrant\u00a0<a title=\"Helena Blavatsky\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Helena_Blavatsky\">Helena Blavatsky<\/a>\u00a0and draws its teachings predominantly from Blavatsky&#8217;s writings. Categorized by scholars of religion as both a\u00a0<a title=\"New religious movement\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_religious_movement\">new religious movement<\/a>\u00a0and as part of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Occultism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Occultism\">occultist<\/a>\u00a0stream of\u00a0<a title=\"Western esotericism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_esotericism\">Western esotericism<\/a>, it draws upon both older European philosophies such as\u00a0<a title=\"Neoplatonism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neoplatonism\">Neoplatonism<\/a>\u00a0and Asian religions such as\u00a0<a title=\"Hinduism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hinduism\">Hinduism<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Buddhism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Buddhism\">Buddhism<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As presented by Blavatsky, Theosophy teaches that there is an ancient and secretive brotherhood of spiritual adepts known as the\u00a0<a title=\"Masters of the Ancient Wisdom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Masters_of_the_Ancient_Wisdom\">Masters<\/a>, who\u2014although found across the world\u2014are centered in\u00a0<a title=\"Tibet\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tibet\">Tibet<\/a>. These Masters are alleged by Blavatsky to have cultivated great wisdom and supernatural powers, and Theosophists believe that it was they who initiated the modern Theosophical movement through disseminating their teachings via Blavatsky. They believe that these Masters are attempting to revive knowledge of an ancient religion once found across the world and which will again come to eclipse the existing\u00a0<a title=\"World religions\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_religions\">world religions<\/a>. Theosophical groups nevertheless do not refer to their system as a &#8220;religion&#8221;. Theosophy preaches the existence of a single, divine\u00a0<a title=\"Absolute (philosophy)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Absolute_(philosophy)\">Absolute<\/a>. It promotes an\u00a0<a title=\"Emanationism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emanationism\">emanationist<\/a>\u00a0cosmology in which the universe is perceived as outward reflections from this Absolute. Theosophy teaches that the purpose of human life is spiritual emancipation and claims that the human\u00a0<a title=\"Soul\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soul#Theosophy\">soul<\/a>\u00a0undergoes\u00a0<a title=\"Reincarnation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reincarnation\">reincarnation<\/a>\u00a0upon bodily death according to a process of\u00a0<a title=\"Karma\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Karma\">karma<\/a>.
