I\u2019ll be honest: It didn\u2019t ruin my enjoyment of the [Biden Inauguration] ceremony. It\u2019s the way Biden talks. He\u2019s Catholic. He\u2019s been using that kind of language for decades. I\u2019m used to it. But his unwillingness to even namecheck<\/em>\u00a0Secular Americans \u2014 indeed, a growing part of his own base \u2014 wasn\u2019t lost on people. The Freedom From Religion Foundation\u00a0said<\/a> that \u201cPieties do not make them better leaders.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That simple quote is incomplete and unfair to Mehta and Biden. Here’s more:<\/p>\n

There is some reason for hope. When Biden signed an executive order yesterday night to\u00a0rescind the Muslim Ban<\/a>, it included that more inclusive language:<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the previous administration enacted a number of Executive Orders and Presidential Proclamations that prevented certain individuals from entering the United States \u2014 first from primarily Muslim countries, and later, from largely African countries.\u00a0Those actions are a stain on our national conscience and are inconsistent with our long history of welcoming people of all faiths and no faith at all.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
