{"id":31959,"date":"2021-01-20T20:55:14","date_gmt":"2021-01-21T02:55:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=31959"},"modified":"2021-01-20T20:55:14","modified_gmt":"2021-01-21T02:55:14","slug":"the-future-of-journalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2021\/01\/20\/the-future-of-journalism\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future Of Journalism?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), an ally of former President Trump, published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/in-depth\/news\/solutions\/2021\/01\/19\/sen-ron-johnson-calls-editorial-unhinged-editorial-board-responds\/4204754001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opinion<\/a> in the <em><strong>milwaukee journal sentinal<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; and appears to have had his nuts blown off. Why? Because the journal fact-checked his opinion piece. Here&#8217;s one snippet &#8211; note the numerals were links in the original text:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All this because I did half of what Democrat Sen. Barbara Boxer did in 2005 when she objected to Ohio\u2019s electors, forcing a two-hour debate. 2 Unlike Senator Boxer \u2014 who to my knowledge was never asked to resign or be expelled \u2014 I did not vote to sustain the objection. 3 When asked by the Associated Press immediately afterward why I voted no, I responded, \u201cWe needed to have the debate, but we also need to respect the rule of law and our constitutional constraints.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And its fact checks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>2.<\/b>\u00a0Although one senator, Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/01\/07\/politics\/congress-ratifies-bush-victory-after-challenge.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenged the results in Ohio<\/a>\u00a0after the 2004 presidential election, the situation was radically different from 2020. Boxer stood alone in the Senate that year, and fellow Democrats distanced themselves from her actions. She was\u00a0not supported by the Democratic candidate for president, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts. In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2004\/ALLPOLITICS\/11\/03\/prez.main\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerry followed normal protocol\u00a0<\/a>for U.S. presidential elections and called President George W. Bush to concede and congratulate him on Nov. 3, the morning after the votes were counted. Unlike Trump, Kerry never questioned the overall integrity of the election.<\/p>\n<p><b>3.<\/b>\u00a0Johnson only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2021\/01\/06\/baldwin-johnson-vote-against-objecting-electoral-college-vote\/6576579002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">voted\u00a0against objections<\/a>\u00a0to Joe Biden&#8217;s victories in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2021\/01\/06\/baldwin-johnson-vote-against-objecting-electoral-college-vote\/6576579002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arizona and Pennsylvania<\/a>\u00a0after the deadly sacking of the U.S. Capitol\u00a0had interrupted Congress&#8217; tallying of the Electoral College vote\u00a0on Jan. 6.\u00a0Up to the insurrection,\u00a0Johnson\u00a0had publicly stated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2021\/01\/02\/ron-johnson-oppose-certifying-joe-bidens-electoral-college-win\/4113042001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he would vote in favor of challenges<\/a>\u00a0to the state-certified votes. Originally, those challenges were to include Wisconsin&#8217;s tallies.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, like Trump, Johnson spent weeks questioning the validity of the election without citing\u00a0any\u00a0evidence.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2020\/12\/16\/senate-hearing-election-leads-acrimony-over-fraud-allegations\/3923137001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">That included holding\u00a0a one-sided hearing<\/a>\u00a0that allowed Trump\u2019s lawyers to once again air allegations of fraud that had already been rejected by dozens of\u00a0courtrooms across America, including both Republican and Democratic judges and even federal judges appointed by Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s role in spreading\u00a0and amplifying\u00a0lies about the election \u2014 including his threat to challenge the ceremonial counting of electoral votes in Congress \u2014 encouraged Trump supporters to believe the result could be overturned, and that helped lead to the tragedy at the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview broadcast Monday night, William Barr, Trump&#8217;s former attorney general, said that doubts raised about the legitimacy of the Nov. 3 election\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/nation-world\/ct-nw-nyt-william-barr-election-capitol-riot-20210119-fcx3gzzcizfrfkcejr4jrqsf5i-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cprecipitated the riot\u201d at the Capitol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell,\u00a0R-Ky.,\u00a0on Tuesday blamed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/01\/19\/mitch-mcconnell-says-attack-capitol-provoked-president-trump\/4213929001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump and other leaders<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cThe mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people and they tried to use fear and violence,\u201d McConnell said on the Senate floor.<\/p>\n<p>In our view, those &#8220;powerful people&#8221; include Senator Johnson.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Zotto. Johnson is caught stripping context, omitting facts, and generally looks like a goon. And this is more effective than newspapers could be &#8211; because the links allow readers to follow up easily, rather than searching for end notes in a newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>A free press must be dedicated to the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but &#8211; even when it comes to external contributions.
