Ossicones<\/b>\u00a0are\u00a0horn<\/a>-like or\u00a0antler<\/a>-like protuberances on the heads of\u00a0giraffes<\/a>, male\u00a0okapis<\/a>, and their extinct relatives, such as\u00a0Sivatherium<\/a><\/i>, and the\u00a0climacoceratids<\/a>, such as\u00a0Climacoceras<\/a><\/i>.\u00a0It has been argued that these extinct species did not have true ossicones; however, later research has revealed their ossicones to be in line with those of\u00a0giraffids<\/a>. Rockwood ranger Frans Moleko Kaweng went out to investigate and it quickly became apparent what had happened. The oldest and tallest giraffe of the herd, the matriarch, was lying dead with a wound on top of her head. It appeared as if one of her ossicones \u2013 the horn-like knobs on a giraffe\u2019s head \u2013 may have acted as a\u00a0lightning<\/a>\u00a0rod in the storm.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
