{"id":30108,"date":"2020-08-12T17:15:25","date_gmt":"2020-08-12T22:15:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/?p=30108"},"modified":"2020-08-12T17:15:25","modified_gmt":"2020-08-12T22:15:25","slug":"the-last-counting-hint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/huewhite.com\/umb\/2020\/08\/12\/the-last-counting-hint\/","title":{"rendered":"The Last Counting Hint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Democrats are a little excited at their victory in South Carolina last night in what they term the last special election before November, or so I infer from an email:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Democrat Spencer Wetmore was just declared the WINNER in the last special election in the nation before November!<\/p>\n<p>This is a big one, too: Spencer\u2019s landslide, 20-point victory is a huge upset in a South Carolina district that favored Donald Trump in 2016, and it\u2019s nothing short of a disaster for GOP Senator Lindsey Graham\u2019s reelection chances.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>20 point victory? Well, yes it is. But there&#8217;s more than one way to look at data like this, isn&#8217;t there?<\/p>\n<p><iframe id=\"datawrapper-chart-BaQej\" style=\"width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;\" title=\"South Carolina 115th State House\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/BaQej\/1\/\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" aria-label=\"chart\"><\/iframe><script type=\"text\/javascript\">!function(){\"use strict\";window.addEventListener(\"message\",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"])for(var e in a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"]){var t=document.getElementById(\"datawrapper-chart-\"+e)||document.querySelector(\"iframe[src*='\"+e+\"']\");t&&(t.style.height=a.data[\"datawrapper-height\"][e]+\"px\")}}))}();\n<\/script><\/p>\n<p>Obviously, turnout for the special election was low, but, still, more Democrats than Republicans showed up. Is it important?<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t make up my mind. A 20 point Democratic victory in a district that voted for Trump has at least some symbolic importance. On the other hand, the losing Republican, Josh Stokes, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voteforstokes.com\/platform.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doesn&#8217;t appear to have wrapped himself around Trump<\/a>, at least so far as I can tell from his campaign site, and his <strong><em>Facebook<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/VoteJoshuaStokes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">page<\/a>. This may be more of a signal that the base won&#8217;t turn out unless you&#8217;ve sworn your allegiance to Trump.<\/p>\n<p>And Stokes no doubt knows that. Perhaps he was testing the anti-Trump Republican waters. Perhaps he truly can&#8217;t stomach Trump and doesn&#8217;t feel simpatico with the Democrats &#8211; or couldn&#8217;t win their primary.<\/p>\n<p>So I see this result as more obscure than revelatory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Democrats are a little excited at their victory in South Carolina last night in what they term the last special election before November, or so I infer from an email: Democrat Spencer Wetmore was just declared the WINNER in the last special election in the nation before November!
