Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., on Tuesday faced down a group of GOP Freedom Caucus critics who complained about her public\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/liz_cheney\/status\/1260372903452905480?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">support for Dr. Anthony Fauci<\/a>\u00a0and her support for Kentucky Republican Rep. Thomas Massie\u2019s primary opponent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmarkEnabled\">Cheney, chair of the House GOP Conference, defended Fauci, the nation\u2019s top infectious disease expert, during a closed-door conference meeting, according to a source familiar with her remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmarkEnabled\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/liz_cheney\/status\/1260372903452905480?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">On May 12, Cheney tweeted:\u00a0<\/a>&#8220;Dr. Fauci is one of the finest public servants we have ever had. He is not a partisan. His only interest is saving lives. We need his expertise and his judgment to defeat this virus. All Americans should be thanking him. He&#8217;ll be playing a dead body.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL), who should surely be acting in community theater rather than wasting his time in the House of Representatives, doesn&#8217;t seem repentant:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Liz Cheney has worked behind the scenes (and now in public) against <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@realDonaldTrump<\/a> and his agenda.<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans deserve better as our Conference Chair. <\/p>\n<p>Liz Cheney should step down or be removed. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MAGA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MAGA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Matt Gaetz (@mattgaetz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mattgaetz\/status\/1285611975121174528?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 21, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Steve Benen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/rachel-maddow-show\/some-gop-think-even-liz-cheney-isn-t-reliably-conservative-n1234571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">marvels<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"endmarkEnabled\">In other words, while going after Cheney for failing to toe a pro-Trump line to their satisfaction, these far-right lawmakers pointed to an instance in which Cheney and Trump were aligned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmarkEnabled\">And while all of this internecine drama is interesting on its own &#8212; it&#8217;s not common for House Republicans to go after one of their own far-right leaders like this &#8212; let&#8217;s not miss the forest for the trees. Fifteen weeks from Election Day, Republicans have no platform, no policy agenda, no coherent vision, and no accomplishments to run on. They&#8217;re behind in the polls, facing poor odds, and confronting the possibility of a Democratic sweep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"endmarkEnabled\">It&#8217;s against this backdrop that several House GOP members are focusing their criticisms on one of their own leaders, who doesn&#8217;t appear to have done anything especially notable to earn their ire.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But I think Benen misses the key point: <em>Cheney endorsed an expert<\/em>. It must be galling to discover your supposed ideological bedmates are actually mad as hatters.
