Longitudinal data effectively follows the same sample over time, which differs fundamentally from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/c\/cross_sectional_analysis.asp\">cross-sectional data<\/a>\u00a0because it follows the same subjects over some time, while cross-sectional data samples different subjects (whether individuals, firms, countries, or regions) at each point in time. Meanwhile, a cross-sectional data set will always draw a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/s\/simple-random-sample.asp\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\">random sample<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>Longitudinal data is used widely in the social sciences, including among economists, political scientists, and sociologists.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/l\/longitudinaldata.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Investopedia<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Noted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/07\/01\/when-corporations-are-more-responsive-than-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Tech companies are finally being shamed into action<\/em><\/a>,&#8221; Jennifer Rubin, <em><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">Considerable thought has already gone into this concept [of civil society applying pressure on social media companies]. The Commission on the Practice of Democratic Citizenship, put together by the American Academy of Arts &amp; Sciences, recently included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amacad.org\/ourcommonpurpose\/report\/section\/10#_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">several suggestions<\/a>\u00a0in its report for bolstering American democracy: \u201cForm a high-level working group to articulate and measure social media\u2019s civic obligations and incorporate those defined metrics in the Democratic Engagement Project\u201d; tax digital advertising to &#8220;support experimental approaches to public social media platforms as well as local and regional investigative journalism\u201d (think of it as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/the_new_gatekeepers\/facebook-public-broadcasting.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PBS or C-SPAN for the Internet<\/a>); and start a new project to \u201cconduct a focused, large-scale, systematic, and <strong>longitudinal<\/strong> study of individual and organizational democratic engagement\u201d in the context of digital media.
