They were slow to declare lockdowns and quick to end them. They also refused to impose statewide mask mandates \u2014 and, in the case of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2020\/06\/16\/texas-mayors-greg-abbott-face-masks\/\">Texas<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2020\/jun\/17\/arizona-coronavirus-covid-19-governor-mayors\">Arizona<\/a>, tried to prevent municipalities from imposing their own rules \u2014 even though studies show that wearing masks can reduce transmission by as much as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5861295\/masks-covid19-spread-fighting\/\">85 percent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \">This toxic imbecility is getting people killed. But recall the adage that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/quotes\/348755-every-country-has-the-government-it-deserves\">every nation gets the government it deserves<\/a>.\u201d Trump and the Trumpy governors did not seize power by force. They were elected by constituents who, in some cases, see masks as the spawn of the devil.<em> [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/06\/30\/welcome-united-states-idiocracy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>WaPo<\/strong><\/a>]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Toxic imbecility<\/em> &#8211; oh, I envy that turn of phrase.<\/p>\n<p>For those who admire and want &#8220;strong leaders,&#8221; well, Boot&#8217;s description is very apt for what you get. The highly hierarchical, <em>You will fall into line!<\/em> toxic atmosphere of the <strong><em>GOP<\/em><\/strong> leads to third-raters such as DeSantis, Kemp, and Pence ending up in positions of responsibility &#8211; and screwing it up badly.
